15 Reasons Why Homework Should Be Banned

Some parents and students think homework should be banned or reduced because it is often a source of stress and frustration.

They argue that students should be able to enjoy their childhood without the extra burden of homework. At the same time, the relationship between parents and their children may be influenced because parents often argue with students to do the homework, while children don’t want to.

1. Lead to Family Stress

Homework can lead to family stress, especially in households where parents have limited education or understanding of the subject being taught. Therefore, parents have to spend lots of time together with their children to do the homework together, and they often feel helpless about teaching their children.

For example, parents will say “This homework is too hard for me”, then the child will reply “How can I overcome it as you also cannot do it”, which will cause more arguments. Such stress and frustration can easily lead to family conflicts.

2. Decrease Time for Other Activities

Students may spend 1 to 2 hours doing homework every night, this makes them work like a robot and much time should be spent on other activities. For example, students can have more time to learn a new language or develop their hobbies.

The extra burden of homework also affects the well-being of children in long term. When children feel too much pressure from school and don’t have enough leisure time, they may become emotionally stressed and anxious.

3. Why Not Do Homework in School

Some parents and students think that homework should be done in school instead of at home. This way, students would have enough time to complete their homework and not feel overwhelmed by the amount of work they need to do at home. 

It could also reduce the number of hours students spend in school since the time used for completing homework can be used for other activities or classes.

To ask for a teacher’s assistance during this time, it is necessary for the student to stay after school or contact them via email outside of school hours. However, due to busy schedules and lack of access, many students struggle to get the help they need in completing their homework.

8. Learning Others is Also Important Besides Homework

Most students have a limited amount of time outside of school and homework eats into this valuable downtime. This can be especially difficult for young children who need more play and leisure time to relax after a long day at school. 

10. The Teacher May Punish Students Who Cannot Finish Homework or Do Badly in It 

In some schools, students who cannot finish their homework or do badly in it may be punished by the teacher.

In addition to students and parents, homework can also be a source of stress for teachers. With the ever-increasing demands placed on them by school administrations, teachers have to make time for marking homework in addition to planning lessons, attending meetings, and teaching classes.

As you can imagine, after receiving students’ homework, a teacher has to grade them, writing feedback and comments. It’s a lot of work and puts an extra burden on the teacher.

If homework can be banned, teachers would have more time to focus on their students’ learning in class which will help make sure that almost no student is left behind due to a lack of understanding material in class.

Students who are able to comprehend the material during school hours can then better apply what they have learned on tests and exams.
