Early Life

Yo Gotti was born as Mario Sentell Giden Mims in Memphis, Tennessee on the 19th of May 1981. Gotti’s father originated from Zimbabwe and his mother was from South Africa.

Yo Gotti grew up in a family with many family members serving time in prison. His father, aunties, and brother have spent time in prison, and he often went inside different state penitentiaries and federal prisons to visit them when he was a kid.

His story is what is classed as a classic ‘rags to riches’ case as he was raised in the poorest part of the Deep South of Tennessee. At a young age, Yo Gotti soon turned to hustle. He told Vogue “being from the hood things like hustling will come your way”.

In effect, it was all this hustling that he was doing that led him to his career in rapping. He started rapping at the tender age of 14. He was initially rapping under the name ‘Lil Yo’ and released his first underground album called Youngsta On A Come Up in 1996. He then would put his tape in local small record stores locally by which he became a small town hit due to his amazing talents.

Career Beginning

Between the years 2000-2006, Gotti released a large number of albums over the course of his career. Some of which include From Da Dope Game 2 Da Rap Game (2000), and Self-Explanatory (2001).

He then managed to get signed by TVT and released his fourth album in 2003 by the name of Life. From this album, he released his first single ‘Dirty South Soldiers’ which featured Lil John.

In 2005, Gotti released his next song ‘Full Time’ which was featured on the soundtrack of the 2005 film ‘Hustle & Flow’. After this, Gotti released his fifth album Back 2 da Basics in 2006.

This album performed pretty well and managed to reach number 12 on the Billboard 200. The other promotional single Women Lie, Men Lie which features Lil Wayne also performed well, and peaked at No. 81 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Later, Gotti stopped the cooperation with RCA Records due to his views of the low sales of this debut album.

In Oct 2012, Gotti released the mixtape series Cocaine Muzik entitled Cocaine Muzik 7: The World Is Yours.

Then in early 2013, Gotti and his label Collective Music Group (CMG) signed a distribution deal with Epic Records after RCA Records.

This song managed to reach number 8 on the Billboard charts. Even better, the single managed to become the highest-charting single in the US.
